Painter, illustrator, writer, author of more than a dozen children’s books. She was born on May 5, 1923 in a Czech-English family. She studied at the School of Applied Arts with Professor Antonín Strnadel. As an artist, she participated in a number of exhibitions both independently and together with her husband Jiří Mrázek. Daisy Mrázková came into the public consciousness in the second half of the 1950s through portraitures (J. Hauková, Adriena, Matka, Veronika, etc.). Her portraits always contained a sense of lightish exaggeration and sensitivity in the concept of color. She emphasized the individual difference at a time that preferred the typification of reality. Her painting was gradually abstracted, but the author had not given up the figure motives for a long time. A typical transitional phase between the figure and the landscape is typical for the 1960s (Zelená louka 1966, Růžová země 1969, etc.). The author says to these compositions: „People crammed into the ground and maybe into the sky.“ Gradually, there is a symbiosis of man and nature. A continuous topic is the reminder and revival of the myth of the landscape (potsherds found in Celtic territory, uncovering of old grave, archeological finds in Slavic settlements). The author’s personal horizon includes a landscape with a historical background (Šárka, Vysočina, Swiss Alps, Kunratice Forest, Prokop Valley, Cornwall coast). Color is very important to her. She reveals the secret of the neighbouring colors „mutually multiplying, mutually illuminating new agents.“She often uses shades of green, ocher, pink, cobalt and ultramarine. In the years 1961-82, she wrote and illustrated books for children. In her books we can feel and extraordynary connection between the literary and artistic components. (Don’t cry toadstool, Hello Jáciček, My Bear Flora, Wonderful Tuesday, What would happen if…, The Elephant and Ant, etc.) In the second half of the 1970s, the black and white drawings approache her paintings as an equivalent partner. (The immediate reason was allergy to turpentine.) In both disciplines we find compositions conditioned by the real situation: field, hill, rock, lake, mountain, pass. The author observe the landscape as a whole and in detail at the same time. The author often frees the sapes from all necessari details. Drawings are often gathere in cyclical in nature and are labeled globally: Mountains, Meditation, Managed Line, Fossilized Seconds), or just the date creation. Mrázková expresses herself either by drawings in which the compactness of matter is emphasized by a dense and regular raster, or by the variability of hatching, where the lines intersect, penetrate and multiply and alternate with white fields. They often form variations on the same theme: Events, The Edge of the Sun, The Story of a Line, Poldi, Papyras, Signals, the Žďár Cycle. For a closer inclusion of Daisy Mrázková’s work in the context of Czech art of the second half of the 20th century, it is possible to mention artists with whom the author feels a close connection. These include Václav Stratil, Jiří Lindovský, Jiří Kornatovský, Jitka Svobodová, Pavel Mühlbauer, Dalibor Chatrný, Václav Fiala, Marie Blabolilová, Inge Kosková. In 1994, the author returned to paintings, namely the tempera technique. Daisy Mrázková’s difficult artistic way had very personal parameters. It was determined by inner discipline, an inconspicuous but persistent will to work declaring elemental invention and natural talent. The reserve associated with distance from social noise and personal determination define her creative work.
